US troops are banned from drinking and British troops are allowed to drink only at official functions with special permission. Soldiers from the rest of the 42-nation alliance are governed by divergent national guidelines on alcohol consumption.
The Isaf headquarters is only half a mile square but it has at least seven bars that serve tax-free beer and wine — including a Tora Bora sports bar complete with flat-screen televisions and football memorabilia, the Gravel Pit, which has a snooker table, a German beer hall, the 37 Club and a Nordic Palace.

Arrow II fails takeoff in Pacific test – setback for Israel’s missile race with Iran
DEBKAfile’s military sources report a serious setback in Israel’s defenses against Iranian ballistic missiles. Thursday, July 23, the newly upgraded Arrow II missile defense system, poised for its first long-range test at the US Pacific range off the central California coast, could not be launched because of “interceptor problems.”
This left Israel’s key defense system, designed to intercept long-range Iranian or Syrian missiles 1,000 kilometers from their launch point, unproven.
The Israeli defense establishment said the problems preventing the launch came from “malfunctions in the communications system.”

MoD blunder in deal on Chinook helicopters ‘endangers lives of British troops’
The lives of British troops in Afghanistan have been put in even greater peril by the Ministry of Defence mishandling the purchase of extra combat helicopters, Parliamentary watchdogs will say today.
Bungling officials placed an order for eight helicopters 14 years ago. But the contract was so ‘appallingly’ written that the Chinooks were never airworthy and have languished in a hangar since 2001.
Now we are borrowing Russian helicopters to fight the Taliban
British frontline troops in Afghanistan are so short of helicopters and transport planes that they are being bailed out by the Russians.
The Mail on Sunday has established that the Ministry of Defence is using civilian Russian-built Mi-8 and Mi-26 transport helicopters to ferry supplies and soldiers in Afghanistan. The pilots are freelance Russians and Ukrainians.
